close ratio gears are for a narrow power band, not nessicarly a high rpm one. the difference in speeds when shifting will be exactly the same ratio whether your shifting at 8k or 6k. -think of a motorcycle, they rev to 12-14k but they don't nessicarly have a close ratio trans, as long as your power band is long enough it doesn't matter what the rpms are. (except you'll end up with a trans that's effectively geared higher, so you'll have to slip the clutch / wheels more for a fast start) You just have to make sure when you upshift from 8.5k you don't end up out of your powerband, I think it would put you above 4k so you should be good.. with turbos this big you WANT low compression so the engine revs faster, and you can run more boost. You might loose some toque, low end or otherwise... but I think low compression is the way to go.. probably like 8 - 8.5
